ABOUT US

With the blessings of Sringeri UbhayaJagadguru Sri Sri Mahasannidhanam Swamigal and Sri Sri Sannidhanam Swamigal, a “one-of-a-kind” Kanya Gurukulam has began in July 2023 in Sengottai, Tamil Nadu.

The name “UbhayaBharati " has been blessed to us by Jagadguru Sri Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Mahaswamigal, who continues to give us direction (Margadarshanam) to our samskritam curriculum.

UbhayaBharati Kanya Gurukulam and its sister institution, Sri Bharati Tirtha Vedapatashala (http://sbtveda.com/) are managed by Sengottai Sri Sharadamba Charitable Trust.

Our Vision

Bharatavarsha is best known for its cultural richness and a reverence for knowledge. This greatness was achieved through diligence, hard work, and a steadfast adherence to Dharma, with the ultimate goal of attaining Moksha. Our vision is to revive this bhava (attitude) towards education in our gurukulam.

Our Gurukulam

UbhayaBharati Kanya Gurukulam is a gurukulam for girls, primarily run by women. It is a fully residential gurukulam with day scholar option for local residents. There is no tuition fee. We provide boarding and lodging as well at no cost to the students.

Our focus is to produce Vidhushis (women experts) in various fields of bharatiya shastras, such as nyaya shastra, vyakarana shastra, natya shastra, ayurveda, sangeeta shastra, jyotisha, samskrita sahitya etc.

We also give importance to following our traditional practices as prescribed in our shastras. This helps the girls develop as well-rounded individuals, who lead through example and take bharateeya knowledge, tradition and culture to the next generation.

Location & Safety:

  • Ideally located in an Agrahara in Sengottai (Tenkasi Dt), Tamil Nadu.
  • Easy access from Thiruvananthapuram & daily train from Chennai.
  • Home-like environment emphasizing a traditional lifestyle.
  • To ensure the safety of the girls, we are taking the following steps
    • The main acharya and the executive trustee will be residents, living near the children
    • There will be a woman chaperone (warden and/or acharya) at all times with the girls, even during playtime, library time etc.
    • Smart-phone / screen use will be restricted in the gurukulam. There will be specific times to call their family using a landline number.
    • There will be security cameras in all entryways and public spaces. No male visitors will be allowed beyond the front verandah.

Highlights

1 Samskritam Education

Our samskritam education, under the guidance of Sringeri Jagadguru Sri Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Mahaswamigal, is modelled based on the same paddati as the samskrita gurukula in Sringeri Sharada Peetham.

Girls begin learning shastriya samskritam at a young age (ideally starting at 6 years of age). Samskritam being a highly structured language was the “lingua franca” in Bharata. Hence all shastras were codified in samskritam, and learning samskritam paves the way for all other areas of study.

It also helps their brain development in the following ways:
  • develops their ability to memorize, remember and retrieve information
  • develops their logical thinking eg. samskritam grammar uses logic similar to modern computer programming languages
  • develops their linguistic abilities eg. most texts in samskritam are written in poetic meters

2 Samskriti Education

In the gurukulam we give emphasis on traditional, yoga and ayurveda based immersive lifestyle. Several bharatiya arts and skills will be taught through workshops. These workshops will be conducted by guest teachers, who are experts in various fields and skills. Here are some sample workshops:

Bharateeya Culture Based: Harikatha, Cooking, Kolam Drawing, Traditional Games etc.

Arts & Crafts: Painting, Doll making, Garland Making, etc.

Vocational Training: Science Kits, Coding, etc.

3 NIOS Education

The girls learn English, Mathematics, Science and Itihasa (decolonized Indian history).

They will graduate with a X and XII certificate through National Institute of Open Schooling with subjects chosen based on their interest and specialization.

All students will have a basic training in Shastriya Sangeetam, Bharatanatyam, Ayurveda and Yoga, and can choose to specialize in these fields. They can also choose other subjects like commerce, accountancy etc.

4 Admission Procedure

The age at entry is ideally 6 years, but we accept students up to 10 years of age. Admission is given upon having a detailed conversation and interview with the child and the family, followed by a trial period where the child along with the mother (or other woman relative) can stay in the gurukulam to see if it is a good fit for the child and for the gurukulam.

Admission period is from May to July every year.
